Ammonia is one of the most widely produced chemicals on earth. In 2010, the world produced more than 130 million tons of ammonia. China, India, Russia and the USA produce more than half of the world’s supply each year. The vast majority of ammonia is used as an agricultural fertilizer.

Although process technology has improved over the years, the basic chemistry is identical to the catalytic reaction of nitrogen and hydrogen process developed by Haber and Bosch in the early 20th century.
